.eu domain information
.eu domain name is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the European Union (EU). Launched on 7 December 2005, it was made available to end users starting from 7 April 2006.
This domain is available to any individual, company, or organization based in the European Economic Area (EEA), which includes the EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. The .eu domain serves as a bridge, uniting the diverse cultures and languages of Europe under one digital identity.
.eu domain represents a commitment to the European project and the values it upholds. Over the years, the .eu domain has grown in popularity, becoming a symbol of Europe's online presence in the global digital landscape.
.eu domains are registered under the conditions specified in the following Regulations of the European Parliament and of the Council: Regulation 733/2002, Regulation 874/2004, Regulation 1654/2005, Regulation 1255/2007, Regulation 560/2009. The rights and obligations of a .eu domain subscriber are specified in PDF documents: Terms and Conditions and Registration Policy.
Who can register a .eu domain name?
.eu is not open to everyone. Eligibility is defined by a genuine connection to the European Union or the European Economic Area (EEA). You can register a .eu domain if you are any of the following: a citizen of an EU member state, regardless of where you currently live; a natural person resident in an EU member state or an EEA country (Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Norway); or an organization, company, or entity with a registered address in an EU member state or EEA country.
Don't worry if you live outside the EU — EU citizenship alone is enough to qualify, even if you live in the United States, Australia, or anywhere else. Proof of eligibility may be requested during registration.
A note on Brexit: when the United Kingdom left the European Union, UK-based individuals and businesses lost the right to register or hold .eu domains. UK citizens who cannot demonstrate citizenship of an EU member state are no longer eligible. If you hold dual citizenship that includes an EU country, you remain fully eligible.
Why choose a .eu domain for your website?
For businesses operating in Europe, .eu offers three practical advantages worth knowing before you default to .com.
Consumer trust
European shoppers understand that .eu domain holders are subject to EU law, GDPR data protection rules, and the consumer rights framework that applies across the bloc. A .eu address signals that you operate under the same standards your customers are protected by — and that carries real weight in purchase decisions, particularly in markets where trust is a conversion factor.
One address, 27 markets
A national domain like .de or .fr works well within its own market but signals belonging to a single country. A .eu address is understood across the entire bloc and carries no national connotation. For cross-border e-commerce, SaaS platforms, or any brand serving customers in multiple EU countries, it functions as a clean, neutral, pan-European identity.
Better name availability
.eu is far less saturated than .com. Short, memorable names that were registered on .com in the 1990s are often still available on .eu today — giving you a realistic shot at a clean, brandable address without auctions, premium pricing, or compromise.
